U.T.F. Freedom Class Refit 2

It had just entered it's third generation of service when the Freedom class Frigate got it's final upgrades, refitting large portions of the ship, which included adding an additional nacelle.  The improvement to cruising speed was the biggest change over previous versions of the ship, and while offense and defense systems were upgraded as well, the extra engine power put the rather modest vessel into a better position for more versatile duties.

HISTORY OF THE FREEDOM CLASS:
After the formation of the U.T.F. a call went out for a new style of ship to differentiate it from other Terran factions and all currently owned Alliance vessels would be slowly replaced and then scrapped.  The Freedom class was the first of those ships to be built and was named in honor of those freedom fighters who gave their lives fighting against the Empire.  An all purpose frigate by design, it could be found just about anywhere the U.T.F. laid claim.  While the Swift light cruiser took over much of the escorting duties, the Freedom class would sometimes accompany early destroyers and battleships.  Early during the war a number of Freedom class frigates fought in defense of several bases along the edge of Federation space.  All of which were lost and from then on it was decided that all U.T.F. vessels must avoid engaging Avadon ships of equal or greater size unless the odds were two to one.  Packs of Freedom class were used in such a way to greater success after that.
Upon reaching the end of it's service life, the Freedom class became an ideal choice for escort duty again, though mostly in fleets were logistics were a concern.  It was still by far the easiest ship the U.T.F. had to maintain and could be assigned nearly anywhere.  While debates over it's continued use during wartime came up many times over the course of the war, the Freedom class remained in service and then served for a time along side the ship that would replace it, the Legacy class.


The U.T.F. background story is this: In an alternate universe the Terran Alliance enjoy a period of peace. A time that is ended when a large number of it's members decide it wants a change in government and would rather conquer it's neighbors rather than co-exist. This civil war rips across the galaxy through all worlds occupied by the Terran Alliance. Eventually years later a stalemate is declared and it is agreed that the rebels leave all Terran Alliance controlled systems to find their own home and live as they choose. Decades pass as the Alliance recovers and the new Empire the rebels wanted emerges in the shadows of space. The Terran Empire, still using older Terran Alliance ship designs, made war with it's neighbors and began carving the path they wanted by first taking independent worlds out until they had the strength to rival the Alliance once more. However, this did not go as planned. The newly minted "Terran Empire", declaring itself in a manner of tyrants, soon knew the troubles of other troubled empires. It's own people grew unhappy with what they had allowed themselves to become and this sparked another Terran Civil War that ripped the Empire apart. The Empire fell to the freedom fighters in the end and it was agreed by those elected to be in charge that conquered worlds be released and given back to their previous owners as a show of good faith that their intentions were good and had no wish to rule over others. The world first colonized after their split from the Alliance was called New Terra, and that is where they regrouped to form a new body of government. Other independent Terran controlled worlds eventually joined the new government and the "United Terran Federation" or "U.T.F." was born.

Now that a bit of background has been established, I want to point out that this is a crossover fan fiction of sorts between the game, Galactic Civilizations III and Star Trek for Galactic Civilizations III. All of the U.T.F.'s ships are in the same style as Starfleet's from Star Trek, starting around the Pre-TOS period and evolving toward the TNG era. Or at least that is the intention. I want to do mostly custom ships and any official ship designs I try to do, I want to make them my own in some way that makes them stand out and isn't a copy of what someone else has done. But we will see how that goes.
